VIJAYA S CHAUHAN
About
The artistic narrative of Vijaya S. Chauhan is centered around achieving a balance in the social and moral behavior of humans in the present times. Recognizing humans with the full capacity of their senses as perfect beings, Chauhan’s work speaks to the imperfections when one sense is lacking, and the unique metaphors this creates for communication. Chauhan is drawn to the enigmatic and transformative metaphor of Braille text, an element that featured prominently in early explorations, focusing on the tactile beauty and the knowledge it holds. Chauhan's journey with sculpting in Braille began amidst visually-impaired friends during graduate school, captivated by the textures on white surfaces and the nuanced expressions that touch could convey. These silent, tactile dialogues, comprehensible solely through touch, became Chauhan's language of silence, free from any discord. The goal was to capture the visual facets of Braille, creating positive dialogues and stanzas that, when combined, form words and sentences, thus creating the 'sound' of emotions. Chauhan's art, especially the use of terracotta, aims to provide a tangible experience for the visually impaired, with each part of the sculpture hanging on the wall, telling a story, depicting colors, or conveying moral messages, contributing to a larger 'Essay' that delivers a natural, raw, and earthy impression of the dialogues Chauhan seeks to present.
